She’s Having a Baby, Too!

We’ve been having a lot of fun lately photographing excited, anxious and beautiful mommies-to-be.  This week was no exception.  As was the case with last week’s parents, we had the privilege of being the ones to record this couple’s wedding a few years ago.  We are so excited to record this next phase in their lives. 

Mom was totally prepared for our session together, and we got the chance to try some new things (which we always love!).  She even came prepared with some scrapbooking supplies, so she and dad would always remember how fun it was NOT knowing whether they are having a boy or a girl.  To see what we mean, check out this handful of favorites from our session together. 



We are going to have to wait until mid-March to wait for this little baby boy or girl to arrive.  Stay tuned . . . we’ll be sure to make introductions as soon as we can.

We Believe in Miracles

Over the weekend, we had the privilege of taking some very special maternity portraits.  These were special portraits for many reasons.  For one, this couple was our very first wedding couple several years ago.  We still cherish that experience AND the picture of them on their Harleys!  For another reason, their road to get here was very long and, at times, they questioned whether this journey was meant to be.  That’s why they truly believe in miracles (and so do we!).

Baby Trevor is expected to arrive in late February – so stay tuned for his introduction.  We already know he is going to me the most loved little boy in the whole world!

Family Portraits on a Cool Fall Day

 We hope all of you survived the crazy snowstorm this weekend and were able to continue with your Halloween celebrations as planned. Snowstorms in October can be weird and exciting all at the same time. Wouldn’t you agree?

Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with any freak snowstorms the morning of this family’s session, but it was very cool for an early October morning. The sun, though bright, was doing little to keep us all warm. That’s OK, because it gave them an excuse to get nice and close to each other and share some body heat.

This is the second time we have had the privilege of photographing this beautiful family. The first time was long before Baby P was born, though, so we have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to update their family portrait for them. It was certainly worth the wait for us; we hope they feel the same.

Family Portraits: A Chance to Re-connect

We have known this family for years, having had the privilege of taking both of the girls’ senior portraits. Perhaps we have been talking about this special family portrait for just as long?  But with all the scheduling challenges (graduations, college and a wedding), it took a while for it to come together.  We are so glad it finally did. 

Spend any amount of time with this family and you will witness the obvious connection they share.  Layer on top of that the fact that they don’t get to see big brother and sister-in-law often since they relocated to the west coast, and you will get swept up in their desire to spend more time together.  We did our best to capture those feelings in our short time together.   



Thank you, all of you, for asking us to be part of your family reunion and for all the laughs.  It is both our pleasure and our privilege.

Third Annual Frederick Robie Cup Adult Spelling Bee

If you have been looking for your next chance to bid on one of our gift certificates while having a little fun and supporting a good cause, you can do so this Saturday at the 3^rd Annual Frederick Robie Cup Adult Spelling Bee sponsored by the Gorham Educational Foundation.  We are donating a $200.00 gift certificate to the silent auction which can be applied to any session fee and/or products we offer.  Here are the details: 

The Gorham Educational Foundation is a private, non-profit organization founded in 2006 dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education in the Gorham, Maine public schools. The organization funds programs that encourage a thirst for knowledge, respect for the community, and responsible citizenship. Since 2006, the organization has awarded over $30,000 in grants in the Gorham schools. 

This year, we will hold the 3rd Annual Frederick Robie Cup Adult Spelling Bee. 

It’s a fun filled evening for adults who want to meet with friends, enjoy tasty refreshments and laugh as local teams from businesses, neighborhoods and schools dust off their mental dictionaries and have a go-of-it without spell-check. “Judged” by local community leaders and bailed out by friend and families, it’s an entertaining evening for all.

Newborn Portraits: Sleepy Sweetness

In July we shared a preview of our most recent maternity session, and we promised we would be back once the new baby finally decided to make an appearance. Well, he’s here and he’s beautiful!

It’s been so long since we’ve had the pleasure of working with a newborn that slept through the whole session, we felt very spoiled! Don’t get us wrong, we love alert and curious newborns; but the sleepy ones are rare and always a special treat. We also love that we’ve had the privilege of photographing this family for several years; and we're looking forward to continuing to photograph them for several more.

Random Sunday Thoughts . . .

Yesterday, we took the kids to Pumpkin Land. It’s an annual tradition around here – Fall would not be complete without it. Of course, I brought my camera along to record the day. Sharing the pictures with family and using them on photo calendars are just a couple of the many ways we will enjoy them.

Any of you who have been on a photo session with me know that I am always on the move when taking pictures. Anytime I am behind the camera, I’m changing my composition and doing what I can to get THAT shot . . . within limits. In doing what it takes to get the shot I long for, I am always aware of my surroundings, aware (especially at places like Pumpkin Land) of the other moms and dads who are also trying to capture the day. We always tell our brides-and-grooms-to-be up front that we are not the photographers who will do whatever it takes to get THAT shot, because we don’t want to interfere with your guests’ ability to enjoy the day. (Think the photographer who gets on the altar to take the shot over the Priest’s shoulder!) I apply that same philosophy when photographing my own kids.

That got me wondering, wouldn’t it be great if I could have the best of both worlds? Wouldn’t it be great if I could always get THAT shot without breaking the rules or interfering with anyone else? What if when I needed to be a little taller, I could just say “Go go Gadget legs” and instantly get the extra height I needed? What if I could be like Elastigirl from the Incredibles and stretch wherever I needed to get THAT shot? Think about all the possibilities that would open up – both as a photographer AND a mom!

Later today, we plan to take our kids’ annual pictures. While I love my children more than life itself, this is often the day that reminds me why people pay professionals to photograph their children! This is the day when another super power always comes in handy . . . the power to be extremely patient. In the end, it will be worth it. Anything worth doing always is.

Senior Portraits: Something Old, Something New

For this senior session, we revisited an oldie but goodie (Macworth Island) and we tried something new (the Audubon Center in Falmouth).  As usual, we had a lot of fun . . . not only because this student was so great to work with but also because of the location itself.  The Audubon had plenty of built in entertainment: apple stealing squirrels, vain turkeys consumed by their reflections in the windows, and peek-a-boo playing groundhogs.  They certainly kept us entertained and the smiles flowing freely, as you can see here.

Senior Portraits: Ending on a High Note

With the early yearbook deadlines arriving next week, things are winding down on our Class of 2012 senior portrait season.  That doesn’t mean we aren’t having any more fun, because we still get to meet great seniors like this one.

She was one of very few seniors this summer who wanted to use Portland Headlight for her location.  (In summers past, we couldn’t get seniors to go anywhere else!)  She also wanted to incorporate her dog, sister and mother in some of the shots. This is a great time to remember who you are and who is important to you. We are always happy to accommodate these kinds of requests.
